How to Prevent Diabetes Through Early Detection of Insulin Resistance

Important Tests for Early Detection Of Diabetes

Market Wire -- 01-25-08

Mark Hyman, M.D. of UltraWellness, details important warning signs of insulin resistance.

LENOX, MA, Jan 24, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) -- One in three children born today will have diabetes in their lifetime.  Yet, according to Mark Hyman, M.D. of UltraWellness, this diabetes epidemic is entirely preventable with early detection of pre-diabetes and insulin resistance.

Type 2 diabetes, or what was once called adult onset diabetes, is often undiagnosed until its later stages, leading to life threatening complications such as heart attacks, strokes, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage; and increasing your risk of dementia, cancs and impotence.

"Most people don't realize that insulin resistance or pre-diabetes can be just as dangerous however, causing heart attacks, strokes, dementia, canc, and impotence -- decades before they get diabetes," said Hyman.  "For that reason, it's extremely important to know the warning signs of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, and get regular testing for diabetes if you have a family history of obesity (especially around the belly), diabetes, early heart disease, or even dementia."

Warning signs of insulin resistance, when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin and must produce more to do the same job of keeping your blood sugar even, is often accompanied by increasing central obesity, fatigue after meals, sugar cravings, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure, problems with blood clotting, and increased inflammation.

"These clues can often be picked up decades before anyone ever gets diabetes -- and, may help you prevent diabetes entirely," said Hyman.  "I recommend early testing for anyone who has a family history of Type 2 diabetes, central abdominal weight gain, or abnormal cholesterol."

The tests Dr. Hyman recommends include:  Insulin glucose challenge tests with two hour glucose challenge, 75 grams measuring fasting, one and two hour blood sugar and insulin;  hemoglobin A1C;  lipid and NMR lipid profiles;  high sensitivity C-reactive protein test;  tests of Homocysteine, Fibrinogen, Ferritin and Uric acid levels, and an elevated liver function test.

These are tests any doctor can perform and are covered by most insurance companies.  For more information on these tests and how they detect pre-diabetes and insulin resistance, visit The UltraWellness Blog (http://ultrawellness.com/blog).
