Lithium Orotate - Alcoholism, Addictions, Herpes, Cold Sores:  Is There Hope?
by Dusty R. Green, M.Ed., Research Scientist/Author

Several Research Scientists have reported in various publications/scientific journals about the positive side effects that lithium orotate may have on alcoholism.  In addition, there are other nutrients, when taken in the right amounts, one may find helpful.  Research has shown that the amino acids dl-phenylalanine, l-glutamine, and the herb kudzu may be useful in the quest to lower alcohol intake.  And, to help protect the liver from the ravages of alcohol, silymarin (milk thistle) and/or silibinin should be considered.

Dr. Chris D. Meletis, in an article he wrote for Vitamin Research News, states "In one study of 42 patients (33 males and 9 females), researchers treated the subjects with 150 mg per day of lithium orotate during an alcohol rehabilitation program for at least six months. The results indicated that 10 of the patients had no relapse for over three and up to 10 years, 13 patients remained without relapse for 1 to 3 years, and the remaining 12 had relapses between 6 to 12 months.  The researchers noted that lithium orotate was safe and the negative side effects noted were minor.  Eight patients developed muscle weakness, loss of appetite or mild apathy, but these symptoms subsided when the daily dose was reduced to 4 to 5 times weekly."(15)

Dr. Meletis adds, "Because of the superior bioavailability of lithium orotate, the therapeutic dosage is much less than prescription forms of lithium (150 mg/day compared to 900-1800 mg of the prescription forms).  In this dosage range of lithium orotate, there are no adverse lithium side effects and no need for monitoring blood serum measurements.  Individuals who are taking other forms of lithium for depression should only discontinue them while under the supervision of a physician."(16)

In an article from Vitamin Research News written by Linda Fugate, Ph.D., she mentions, "Animals on low-lithium diets have shown reproductive problems, shorter life spans, poor lipid metabolism, and behavioral abnormalities.(17-19)  In epidemiological studies of humans, low levels of lithium in drinking water have been correlated with a higher incidence of mental hospital admissions(20), violent crime, suicide, drug addiction(21), and heart disease.(21)  Lithium levels in the scalp hair of violent criminals and heart disease patients have been found to be lower than those in healthy volunteers.(22)"

Jonathan V. Wright, M.D., writes in one of his newsletters, "In 30 years of nutritionally oriented practice, I've been told by many alcoholics and their relatives that low-dose lithium can be very helpful for both alcoholism and associated mood disorders.  For "practicing" alcoholics, I recommend a trial of lithium orotate, 10 milligrams three times daily (along with diet advice, niacin, glutamine, and other supplements).  I ask recovering alcoholics to try 5 milligrams, three times daily (occasionally more).  The majority of these patients report improved mood and decreased desire for alcohol after about six weeks using lithium therapy.

Dr. Wright adds, "According to one review article in the British Journal of Addiction, "both controlled and uncontrolled experiments show that symptoms of both alcoholism and affective disturbance are supported in patients treated with lithium."(23)  (All of the studies reviewed used high dose prescription lithium.)

Dr. Wright"s continued dialogue, "I also often recommend direct blood relatives of alcoholics (parents, children, or siblings) consider a trial of lithium orotate -- 5 milligrams two or three times daily, even if they have never noticed a mood problem.  I explain that this is a "personal clinical trial," and a safe one, that they can discontinue in six to eight weeks if they don't feel a difference.  I also ask that the individual discuss this personal clinical trial with their husband, wife, or other close household member, since I've found that the individual doesn't always notice subtle (or even not-so-subtle) mood changes.  But, immediate family members notice, particularly when the changes are for the better!  I haven't kept a count of exactly how many individuals have tried this approach over the last 30 years but, it's probably somewhere in the vicinity of 300 to 400 ... maybe more.  And, the majority report positive changes -- less depression and irritability for women, and less irritability and "temper" for men."

Herpes, Cold Sores, Shingles and Related Viruses

There is evidence showing that people who are stressed, angered easily, and depressed, have more herpes outbreaks, colds and related virus problems than others since these attitudes lower the immune response.  This does not mean that "being busy" is problematic in that regard.  The person's reaction to and handling of the situation is paramount for his/her physical and mental well-being.

As Dr. Wayne Dyer states in one of his public television appearances, "Attitude is everything -- I just tell the virus it's not welcome in this house" (meaning his body).

Perhaps it is easy to understand why lithium orotate may be beneficial in this regard.  Since lithium has a track record of positive attitude adjustment, it is logical to assume that it may be helpful in the viral arena.

In addition to attitude, Smartbodyz Nutrition has been recommending the combination of several supplements for herpes/cold sores support for years.  Baking soda water, BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), l-lysine (in the form of capsules, liquid, cream, and lip balm), and the herb andrographis paniculata have substantial track records noted in the scientific literature showing they help to lower the incidence of outbreaks and/or expedite the healing of blisters associated with herpes.

In support of the lithium/viral link, Jonathan V. Wright, M.D., reports in an article he wrote entitled The Misunderstood Mineral, "One research group reported that lithium may inhibit the reproduction of several viruses, including herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1, HSV-2), adenovirus (the "common cold" virus), cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (associated with mononucleosis and many cases of chronic fatigue), and the measles virus."(24)

He continues, "Another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of lithium carbonate (doses ranging from 150-900 milligrams daily), demonstrated a consistent reduction in the number of herpes episodes per month, the average duration of each episode, the total number of infection days per month, and the maximum symptom severity.  In contrast, treatment with placebo resulted in an increase in three of the four severity measures."(25)

Another couple of references supporting the lithium/herpes association can be found in the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, here and here.

Also, worthy of mention, Dr. Wright adds, "In addition to lithium, selenium, lysine, and other nutrients can also help suppress the reproduction of herpes simplex (and other viruses) and speed the recovery process should an active infection occur. I tend to think it's better-and safer-to follow this approach (using small quantities of several effective nutrients rather than a larger quantity of just one).

  • Keep lithium orotate out of reach of children,
  • Do not exceed recommended dose,
  • If you have a bad reaction or experience negative side-effects, discontinue use immediately,
  • When using lithium orotate, please inform your physician,
  • Lithium should not be used by individuals with significant renal or cardiovascular diseases, severe debilitation or dehydration, or sodium depletion, and by individuals who are taking diuretics or ACE inhibitors,
  • Consult your doctor before use if you are taking anti-hypertensive drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesic drugs or insulin,
  • Lithium should not be used by pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers.
