Sam-e (S-Adenosylmethionine) Amino Acid, Vitamins, Side Effects, Supplements

Life Extension remains vigilant in ensuring that our members are provided with the best quality SAMe.  We are thankful that the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) will soon be publishing official standards delineating the isomer composition requirements for SAMe.  This will finally provide an official standard by which supplement companies can assay SAMe raw material to ensure that it meets pharmaceutical consistency.

While there will always be unscrupulous companies willing to buy the cheapest raw material offered to them, Life Extension has found that reputable supplement companies want to provide their customers with active ingredients that provide real benefits.  The problem with SAMe has been the lack of a reliable assay standard.  Life Extension is not aware of any company that analyzes the isomer ratios (comparing the active SS isomer to the inactive RS isomer) of the SAMe material it imports.

SAM-e is a chiral molecule and therefore consists of two forms:  (S,S) SAM-e and (R,S) SAM-e.  The biologically active form is the (S,S) structure, while the (R,S) structure is biologically inactive.  Jarrow Formulas' SAM-e is made naturally by microbiological fermentation and then specially processed to preserve 68-80% (S,S) SAM-e, the highest active level available.

SAM-e (S-Adenosylmethionine) is an amino acid derivative that has been clinically proven.  Found in all living cells, SAM-e is also called activated methionine (an essential amino acid) since it is formed by the combining of ATP with methionine.  SAM-e has undergone dozens of trials.  Researchers studying the positive side effects of SAM-e have identified the following benefits of SAM-e:

SAM-e supports healthy connective tissue through transulfuration.  In this process, critical components of connective tissue, including glucosamine and the chondroitin sulfates, are sulfated by SAM-e metabolites.

SAM-e methylation reactions are involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as L-dopa, dopamine and related hormones, epinephrine and phosphatidylcholine (a component of lecithin).

SAM-e supports the synthesis of glutathione (GSH) and glutathione-dependent enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase).

Methylation of DNA appears to be important in the suppression of errors in DNA replication.  Demethylation of DNA is considered a contributor to the aging process.  Proper methylation through substances such as SAM-e positively influences longevity.

The label on the Jarrow product you receive states "Take 1 to 3 tablets per day before meals, or as directed by your qualified health consultant."  Most eating experts suggest consuming 5-6 meals per day so this statement may be misleading.  A more accurate dose model would be:

The effective oral dose of SAMe is 800-1600 mg/day.  The Life Extension Foundation recommends people begin by taking four 200 mg tablets per day-once in the morning, and once in the afternoon.  Another tablet or two should be added at noon, conditions do not improve within 2 days.  Another tablet in the evening may be necessary for some people.  Some people have been given 1600 mg from the first day without significant adverse side effects beyond dry mouth and nausea.

SAMe is formed when the body combines the amino acid L-methionine with ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy molecule found in physiologic processes.  SAMe may be the most active and efficient of the various methyl donors currently known.  SAMe is considered "The Active Methionine."  It is utilized for transmethylation, transulfuration and amino propylation.

SAM-e 200 and 400 is enteric coated to maximize stability and safety.

Store in a cool, dry place. Suitable for vegetarians.
